On guard of night and of herself

Description

I made this drawing for the Luna Day of Equestria Daily on December 21st. The drawing of Luna herself is actually part of a work in progress of a scene from my fanfiction Lessons in quirks, but that complete scene will require a much more complex background (including a birds eye view on a burning forest and a dragon as well as a Fluttershy, who I already drew but didn't include in the picture version for the Luna day submission) and might be a bit out of context for the Luna day. Therefore I created a nighttime background with Canterlot outlines on the left and a Nightmaremoon spotted moon to symbolize Luna's guarding of the night while also on guard of her own darker sides.

First of all, I personally love Luna and the idea of the whole picture. The choice of color is really good and as close to the show as possible. I like how you tried to keep Luna´s original design, but changed her a little bit, like the wings. Luna´s expression here is very well done, she looks ready to face whatever the night will be like. Furthermore there is Nightmare Moons helmet. I love the way Luna wears it while not being Nightmare Moon, the idea here is just brilliant (you even changed the helmet a little bit what makes it even more obvious that she won't become Nightmare Moon again). Moreover there is the silhouette of Canterlot and the castle in the background what brings a very nice and almost mystical touch to the whole piece. You even thought about the waterfalls down the caste!
But there are also a few little details that are not that perfect like the length of her legs. This is just my opinion (I often draw them too long) but I think they seem quite short for an alicorn princess. Again this is just my personal opinion.
And there is one detail bothering me: The moon! First of all I love the way you did it, it looks just like in the show, but the mare in the moon (the unicorn/alicorn "print" on the moon surface) only appeared during the time Luna was kept there after she became Nightmare Moon. Obviously Luna is not prisoned at the moon at the moment of the picture, so this little detail doesn't make so much sense (even in the show the mare in the moon disappeared after Nightmare Moon/Luna escaped and appeared at the moment she was banished there). But this is just a little detail that has nothing to do with your drawing style.
I love the little ombre effect at the sky and how the full moon glows as well as the stars do. Speaking of stars (as we know I'm not an expert with that xD) it would have been nice to see some more, just little tiny dots for more depth of the night sky. On the other hand you could argue that they are not visible because the moon shines so bright (like in real life when the moon is really bright you can't see all the stars far away), so this isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I think this is all I have to say about this piece.
Again: All in all great work, keep going!
